At the core, what we do at Shell is the element of diversity and inclusion and also the element of care. This program, the learners with disability learnership program was done specifically to address the need in terms of providing skills to people with disability and actually integrating them into the workplace. We approached Old Mutual requesting them to host our learners where Shell would be paying for their stipend and we would also be paying for the training program itself. And Old Mutual then had capacity to host our learners in East London and also here in PE. From 2014 up until 2019 we have actually put 39 learners in this learnership program where they have left with a qualification and also work experience.

So, what got me here was when I saw the advert of the Shell learnership. I applied for the learnership and I was successful. I think just that as a starting point alone has made a major impact in my life where I can achieve more things, things that I have felt are maybe a bit negative about previously.

My father just told me to apply and it was a learnership for people with disabilities.

I’m cardiac, I’ve got a heart problem and that prevents me from doing any excessive physical work.

If I walk, you’ll see that my right leg is shorter than my left leg. We had to do a lot of modules. It was just awesome because I’ve never been in a working environment so that was my first time. Joining Old Mutual was so great. It taught me a lot, to grow as a person.

The initiative also gave me that edge on how important communication is in the business, how we communicate as well and it’s really enabled to get me where I am today.

Two years before the learnership started my mom passed away so that was very, very difficult for me. So after she died, a month after that I fell and I broke my leg. The next day I was supposed to go for an interview, but I didn’t make it. But then you go through tests and you see how God can take you out of situations. And then after this when I entered the learnership, it was really, really amazing. I want to thank Shell, I want to thank Isilumko, I want to thank Old Mutual. Thank you very much for the opportunity. I really, really do appreciate it.
