Mathematics is a subject and a discipline that all children, anywhere in the world, need to learn. What I have learnt over the past 51 years in education is that all children must learn Mathematics to understand how money works, how economics works, how analytical skills are developed, how do you interpret what’s going on around you so that you gain advantages for yourself.
As the only school in the district, Leeu-Gamka Primary School plays a critical role in giving the children in the community their educational foundation in life.
The program supports Maths teachers.
Leeu-Gamka Primary School was one of the schools selected for the Shell Rally to Numeracy program.
It would have been a sad day if our school hadn't been chosen.
We received hands on support from Shell Rally to Numeracy and the Maths Centre.
We received practical training.
The facilitators would come into your class while you were giving a lesson.
Directly after school we would sit with them and they would give us guidance.
We worked together as a group.
If you felt you needed guidance as an educator
you just had to ask and they would come to your class.
I used to struggle a lot with Maths before the program because we couldn’t visualise what we were being taught.
When we went to the Maths hub, Mrs Solomons supported me and gave me material to help improve my marks.
When the Maths material arrived I understood it better and I could grasp it.
The teacher explained it better and there were Maths games we could use.
It’s been a good success in the school and what we did at Leeu-Gamka, we looked at the performance of the school versus also the district where they are located and we tracked that on a bi-annual basis and they’ve improved. Our programs are designed so that it’s not an extramural activity because we want to help all the children.
Children want to see visuals, they want to touch Maths.
They want to enjoy Maths.
The Shell Numeracy Mathematics Program gave those children a tremendous look into how Mathematics can be fun, engaging, colorful, challenging but easy to learn.
The program sustains itself through the dedicated teachers who were part of the Shell Rally to Numeracy Program and continues to deliver great results.
